Overview

How SSC CGL selection works

CGL selection is a multi-stage funnel. You qualify Tier 1 to reach Tier 2; Tier 2 decides your merit; its qualifying CKT and DEST sections have higher standards for some posts; posts are allotted on merit-cum-preference, and the allotted department then verifies your documents after the final result.

Stage-by-stage flow

  1. Tier 1 — qualifying CBTClear the category cut-off to be shortlisted for Tier 2. Marks don’t carry forward.
  2. Tier 2 — merit CBTThe stage that decides your rank, with multiple papers depending on the post.
  3. Skill test (CKT & DEST)Part of Tier 2 Paper I for all — qualifying only, not counted in merit; higher standards for some posts.
  4. Final merit & allotmentPosts assigned by Tier 2 rank, category and preference order.
  5. Document verificationDone by the User Department after the final result — produce originals to confirm age, education and category.
Stage 1

Tier 1 — the gateway

A 60-minute objective CBT across four sections (General Intelligence, GK, Quantitative Aptitude, English), with sectional timers in 2026. It’s purely qualifying — you must clear the category cut-off, but the marks don’t count toward final merit.

Stage 2

Tier 2 — the decider

Tier 2 is where your rank is built. It has multiple papers — Paper I for all posts, with Paper II (Statistics) for JSO / Statistical Investigator Gr-II and Paper III (General Studies – Finance & Economics) for AAO. Your Tier 2 performance, after normalization, forms the final merit.

Skill tests: DEST & CKT

In CGL 2026 every candidate takes both in Tier 2 Paper I — you must pass, but the score doesn’t affect your rank. Certain posts need higher qualifying standards.

⌨
DESTData Entry Speed Test — about 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes; higher standard for e.g. Tax Assistant (CBIC / CBDT)
🖥
CKTComputer Knowledge Test (Section III, 20 Qs) — higher standard for e.g. ASO in CSS/MEA/AFHQ, Inspector (CBIC)

Document verification

For CGL 2026, document verification is done by the User Department after the final result. Selected candidates present original documents — matriculation certificate, degree, category and any relaxation proof — to confirm the details declared in the form. Discrepancies can cost you the post.

Field posts (e.g. Inspector CBIC/CBN, SI CBI/NIA/NCB) also have physical and medical tests, conducted by the User Department after final selection.

Final selection

Final merit & post allotment

SSC prepares a category-wise merit list from Tier 2 marks (normalized across shifts). Posts are then allotted by your rank, category and the preference order you filled — the most sought-after posts closing at the highest cut-offs.

FAQ

Selection questions, answered

Tier 1 (qualifying CBT), Tier 2 (merit CBT, including the qualifying CKT and DEST sections), merit-cum-preference post allotment, and document verification by the User Department after the final result.
No. Tier 1 is only qualifying. Your final rank is built solely from Tier 2 marks, after normalization.
In CGL 2026 the CKT and DEST are part of Tier 2 Paper I for all candidates. Posts like Tax Assistant need a higher DEST standard, and ASO in CSS/MEA/AFHQ, Inspector (CBIC) etc. need higher CKT and DEST standards. Both are qualifying only and don’t affect your rank.
Because the exam runs in multiple shifts of varying difficulty, SSC adjusts scores across shifts so candidates are compared fairly. Your normalized Tier 2 marks decide merit.
