SSC CHSL Selection Process 2026 · how you get selected

From application to appointment — the two computer-based tiers, the qualifying Computer Knowledge Test and typing / skill test, post preferences, how the merit list is built, and document verification by your allotted department.

Overview

How SSC CHSL selection works

CHSL selection is a multi-stage funnel. You clear Tier 1 to reach Tier 2; Tier 2 Sections I and II decide your merit; the Computer Knowledge Test and the typing / skill test must be passed; posts are allotted on merit-cum-preference, and the allotted department verifies your documents after the final result.

Tier 1
Objective CBT — shortlisting only
Tier 2
Objective CBT — Sections I & II (360 marks) decide merit
Skill test
Computer Knowledge Test (Section III) & typing / skill test (Section IV) — qualifying
Document verification
By the User Department, after the final result

The funnel

Stage-by-stage flow

  1. Tier 1 — shortlisting CBTClear the category cut-off for your post group to be shortlisted for Tier 2. The marks don’t count in merit (they only break ties).
  2. Tier 2 — merit CBTSections I and II — Maths, Reasoning, English and General Awareness, 360 marks — decide your rank.
  3. Qualifying tests (CKT & typing / skill)Computer Knowledge (Section III) and a typing test for LDC / JSA or a skill test for DEO (Section IV), on the same day — pass both; not counted in merit.
  4. Post preference & allotmentSubmit your post / department preferences online before the result; posts are assigned by Tier 2 rank, category and preference order.
  5. Document verificationDone by the User Department after the final result — produce originals to confirm age, education and category.
Stage 1

Tier 1 — the gateway

A 60-minute objective CBT across four parts (English, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness), each with a 15-minute sectional timer. SSC can fix separate category-wise cut-offs for three post groups — LDC / JSA, DEO in the Para 8.1 offices, and other DEO / DEO Grade ‘A’. In the CHSL 2025 Tier 1 result, the UR cut-off was 144.26 for LDC / JSA, 165.27 for DEO (other than Science stream) and 169.54 for DEO (Science stream), in normalized marks out of 200.

Stage 2

Tier 2 — the decider

Tier 2 is where your rank is built. Session I has Section I (Mathematical Abilities and Reasoning), Section II (English and General Awareness) and Section III (Computer Knowledge); Session II is the typing / skill test. You must clear the minimum qualifying marks in Sections I–III — 30% for UR, 25% for OBC / EWS and 20% for others — and your merit is the total of Sections I and II, normalized where the exam runs in multiple shifts.

Qualifying only

Skill tests: typing test & CKT

Every Tier 2 candidate takes the Computer Knowledge Test and either a typing test or a skill test, depending on the post — you must pass, but the score doesn’t affect your rank.

⌨
Typing / skill testSection IV — LDC / JSA type at 35 wpm (English) or 30 wpm (Hindi) for 10 minutes; DEO need 8,000 key depressions per hour in 15 minutes (15,000 for DEO in the Para 8.1 offices). In CHSL 2025 the LDC / JSA typing test allowed up to 7% mistakes for UR and 10% for other categories.
🖥
CKTComputer Knowledge Test (Section III, 15 Qs, 45 marks). In CHSL 2025 the qualifying mark was 13.5 for UR, 11.25 for OBC / EWS and 9 for other categories.

Document verification

For CHSL 2026, document verification is done by the User Ministries / Departments after the final result. Selected candidates present originals — Matriculation certificate, Class 12 certificate, category / PwBD / ESM certificates, any equivalence or age-relaxation proof, and a No Objection Certificate if already in government service. If a claim in your form isn’t backed by documents, your candidature is cancelled.

Only LDC in the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) also has a physical efficiency test (a one-mile run in 10 minutes) and physical & medical standards, checked by BRO after selection. An allotted post isn’t changed if you fail them, so check Annexure-XVI of the notice before choosing BRO.

Final selection

Final merit & post allotment

SSC prepares the merit list from your total in Tier 2 Sections I and II (normalized across shifts), provided you qualify Sections III and IV. Posts are allotted by rank, category and the preferences you submitted online — once you get your highest available preference, you aren’t considered for the others. Ties are broken by Section I marks, then Tier 1 marks, then date of birth (older first). SSC keeps no waiting list and uses a sliding mechanism instead; in CHSL 2025, 3,515 candidates were finally selected against 3,522 vacancies.

FAQ

Selection questions, answered

Tier 1 (shortlisting CBT), Tier 2 (Sections I and II for merit, plus the qualifying Computer Knowledge Test and typing / skill test), online post preferences, merit-cum-preference allotment, and document verification by the User Department after the final result. The 2026 scheme has no descriptive paper or interview.
No. Tier 1 only shortlists you for Tier 2. Your final rank comes from Tier 2 Sections I and II; Tier 1 marks are used only to break a tie after Section I marks.
All of them. LDC / JSA candidates take a typing test, and DEO / DEO Grade ‘A’ candidates take a data-entry skill test, from which no one is exempt. Some candidates with disabilities who are certified as unable to type may be exempted from the LDC / JSA typing test. Both tests are qualifying only.
Because the exam runs in multiple shifts, SSC adjusts scores across shifts using its published normalization procedure so candidates are compared fairly. Normalized scores are used for cut-offs and the final merit.
